Colin Cowherd’s compliment to Tennessee and their often-misplaced belief in their team drew the ire of the Vols fans after their blowout loss to Alabama.

Next to the definition of “backhanded compliment,” you might see a screenshot of Colin Cowherd’s latest tweet about Tennesee fans.

Cowherd decided to comment on the Volunteers’ battering at the hands of Alabama in the most condescending of ways.

As if a 48-17 loss wasn’t a bad enough burn for one Saturday as the Vols lost for the 14th straight time vs. their SEC West rival.

Colin Cowherd trolled Tennessee fans for expecting too much

Alabama was a three-touchdown favorite over Tennessee, so anyone who thought they’d give the Crimson Tide problems might have been dreaming a bit too hard.

While Vol quarterback Jarrett Guarantano bounced back somewhat from a horrendous two-interception performance in last week’s loss to Kentucky, his two-touchdowns definitely weren’t enough to prevent a third-straight loss for Tennessee.

Defensively, the Volunteers couldn’t find a way to stop the Alabama offense. They gave up three touchdowns to running back Najee Harris and 387 yards through the air to quarterback Mac Jones.

Jeremy Pruitt’s team is now 2-3 and any good feelings that may have come from winning the opening two games of the season have worn off. If the losses had been exclusive to Georgia and Alabama, there might have been a reason to give the Vols a bit of a pass. It’s the defeat to Kentucky that really stings.

As Cowherd said, Tennessee’s last national title was in 1998 and they haven’t been particularly competitive on a national scale since. In 2001, Phil Fulmer managed an 11-2 record. The last time any Volunteer head coach won 10 games was in 2007.

That’s the thing though. It’s been a long and difficult road, what do Vols fans have if not dreams?
