Justin Fields put together one heck of a 2020 debut for Ohio State football Saturday.

Justin Fields did not skip a beat in his first game of the 2020 college football season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback went out there and was nearly perfect vs. the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Not even a full day since Graham Mertz attempted perfection vs. the Illinois Fighting Illini, Fields made darn sure everybody knows he’s the best quarterback in the Big Ten and not the redshirt signal-caller for the Wisconsin Badgers. Nebraska had no answer for Fields on Saturday.

Justin Fields’ evisceration of Nebraska has him right back where he belongs.

Fields completed 20-of-21 passes for 276 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had 15 carries for 54 yards and a splendid touchdown run. Ohio State dominated the Cornhuskers on the ground and through the air en route to a 52-17 blowout victory. While there were moments early in the game where Nebraska played well, we all know who the best team in the Big Ten is.

It’s been a long and tumultuous offseason for Fields and other Big Ten stars. Keep in mind there wasn’t even going to be a Big Ten football season until a few weeks ago. We expect this to be Fields’ last season of college ball before being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft behind fellow Georgia boy Trevor Lawrence of the Clemson Tigers. They will battle it out for the Heisman.

Though Fields may have some work to do to keep pace with Lawrence and Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones in the 2020 Heisman Trophy race, he can only control what he can control. It may only be a nine-game Big Ten season, but if he plays close to this throughout and leads the Buckeyes to an undefeated conference campaign, it might be enough for him to win the Heisman.

Lawrence and Jones will end up playing more games than Fields this year, as Clemson could play 12 with a conference championship and Alabama 11 with an SEC title bout. However, pure undeniable domination of the opposition in a conference like the Big Ten may end up serving Fields in his quest to bring another Heisman back to Columbus. We will need more Saturdays like this.

Fields will be a Heisman finalist this season, but he can’t slip up once in his chase for the trophy.
