Ohio State football coach Ryan Day apologized to Nebraska coach Scott Frost for beating his team by so much and embarrassing his team in the season-opener.

Ryan Day apologized to Scott Frost for his Ohio State football team running up the score.

The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes clobbered the unranked Nebraska Cornhuskers 52-17 in their Big Ten opener. We had a feeling Ohio State might win this conference game in blowout fashion, but Day did not intend for backup quarterback Jack Miller III to take it in himself while Ohio State was already up 45-17 late. His apology to Frost at least seems genuine, but it is too little, too late.

Running up the score in football has always been a controversial offensive tactic

Blowing out the opposition is just part of sports in general, but the manner in which the winning team does it says a lot about them. Football is a game where you need to play at max effort to avoid, or at least limit, being injured. A way that football teams try to win with class is to bring in backups when the game is well out of reach, usually going with conservative offensive play calls.

Frost knows a thing or two about blowing out an opponent from his days as the Nebraska starting quarterback, to leading the AAC’s UCF Knights to a perfect season back in 2017. The shoe may be on the other foot in this scenario, but Day at least acknowledges that last touchdown was a younger player rubbing it in. Then again, once you stop trying to score, so will we.

Ultimately, this wasn’t an egregious attempt at running up the score. This didn’t feel like something we used to see out of Chip Kelly and the Oregon Ducks back in the day. Even though Day is a Kelly disciple himself, having the awareness to admit a potential wrongdoing and a possible slight on Nebraska is the right thing to do, though he did not have to do it from this game.

Ohio State is championship-caliber under Day and Nebraska is still far from it under Frost.
