It’s been a rough season for the Dallas Cowboys, but will Mike McCarthy be held accountable and fired?

To say the Dallas Cowboys have been a total disaster is to be kinder to their situation than required. Without a mind-boggling onside kick snafu by the Falcons and the Giants being the Giants, we’d be sitting here talking about a winless Cowboys team.

It’s safe to say the honeymoon period with Mike McCarthy is officially over, and now questions are already being asked about whether he’s the right guy for the job.

To be fair, many Cowboys fans asked this when he was hired and Packers fans offered up their two cents to confirm the fears. But the product speaks for itself and another horrendous day for the Cowboys means it’s not preposterous to check the temperature of McCarthy’s seat.

Will Dallas Cowboys fire Mike McCarthy?

The short answer is no, with a but.

No the Cowboys won’t fire Mike McCarthy but if this continues it’s going to be harder and harder to not justify doing so. Jerry Jones is loyal to a fault when it comes to his hires, but McCarthy is not someone who has kicked around Jones’ franchise in years past. The hardest part about moving on from Jason Garrett was the relationship between the two men — that doesn’t exist with McCarthy.

Since buying the Cowboys in 1989, no Cowboys coach has been one-and-done. Chan Gailey is the closest we’ve come to that but he spent two seasons in Dallas and managed to make the playoffs in both seasons.

McCarthy, as bad as he and the Cowboys have been this season, could still make the playoffs as NFC East champions. Think about that, this season has been disastrous in every single imaginable way and Cowboys fans have run out of patience in less than half a season. But despite all of that, t-shirts and banners could be printed at the end of the season celebrating a division title.

It’s the worst possible way to make the playoffs and it would almost require an asterisk but it’s a measure of success nonetheless. Jones firing McCarthy after he took a severely depleted team to the playoffs — and God forbid winning a game — would be extremely out of character.
