3 quarterbacks Dallas Cowboys should trade for to replace Andy Dalton

One game is not enough to write off Andy Dalton, but the Dallas Cowboys should still have a trade for one of these 3 quarterbacks on their radar.

Someone has to win the NFC East, and at 2-4 heading into Sunday’s game against Washington the Dallas Cowboys are as good a bet as any. Dak Prescott is of course out for the season, but Andy Dalton should be able to keep things afloat.

Dalton’s first start, in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals, was not promising. Two fumbles by Ezekiel Elliott were not helpful, but Dalton was not very good himself (34-for-54 for 266 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) in a 38-10 loss.

One game is not enough to right the narrative on Dalton for the rest of the season. Sunday against Washington is a get-right spot for the Cowboys, but a loss would give the two teams matching 2-5 records.

It’s bordering on panic time in Dallas, and speculation will ramp up on a trade for someone to replace Dalton if he plays poorly on Sunday (win or lose?).

If only as a viable option to replace Dalton if/when he falters, here are three quarterbacks the Cowboys should consider trading for.

Fitzpatrick has played well this season, completing a career-best 70.1 percent of his passes for 1,535 yards with 10 touchdown passes and seven interceptions (three in Week 1). But two straight wins to bring the Dolphins to 3-3 heading into their Week 7 bye was not enough to keep him atop the depth chart, as Tua Tagovailoa will make his first NFL start in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Fitzpatrick expressed his disappointment with being benched, but he’s also hardly the type to make serious waves behind the scenes or demand a trade. And if Tagovailoa struggles mightily or gets injured, he’s still a nice fallback option for the Dolphins.

That said, Fitzpatrick is an interesting fit for the Cowboys. His aggressive playing style invites a wide range of outcomes, but the upside of the offense would be enhanced. He is mobile, whereas Dalton is not, and offers production as a runner more like Prescott does (135 yards and two touchdowns this season). Maybe the Dolphins try to do “FitzMagic” a solid, and trade him somewhere with (theoretically) a better opportunity to play.
