3. Domingo German

German is the forgotten man of the Yankees pitching staff at the moment. He’s eligible to return to the active roster from suspension when the 2021 season begins, but no one really knows whether or not the team wants him back.

In fairness to the front office, they’ve had limited contact with German since his suspension. It’s very likely they will want to bring him to Spring Training to assess where he is physically and mentally before making any firm decisions about his future with the franchise.

It’s easy to envision a scenario where Cashman and German’s representatives decide a fresh start somewhere else is best for everyone involved. He has a lot of off-field baggage in New York that might benefit from moving to a smaller market with a bit less media scrutiny.

The big question for the Yankees is whether or not German has any real trade value at the moment. On one hand, he was a league-average or better starting pitcher when he last took the mound in the majors. On the other, no one knows what he’s been up to for the better part of a calendar year.

Another team could try to buy low on a starting pitcher who has the talent to solidify their rotation. The Yankees won’t give him away, but they won’t hesitate to move him for a player who can help them on the field without any off-field drama.
