3 replacements for Matt Nagy as Bears head coach
If the Chicago Bears decided to part ways with Matt Nagy, which new head coach could come in and take the team to the next level?
Reality finally came home to roost for the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football as they were humbled by the Los Angeles Rams, 24-10.
The Bears had been contending for the NFC North with a 5-1 record, but they had made a habit of winning ugly to get there. The illusion wore off in Los Angeles, putting an even bigger spotlight on head coach Matt Nagy.
Nagy is responsible for the Bears’ offense, which is exactly what has been the problem this whole time. Whether it’s now or later, his time will eventually run out. Here are some guys who could replace him for the better:
Eric Bienemy
It’s time for someone to give Eric Bienemy a shot as a head coach. Why not the Bears? Maybe the second time will be the charm with Kansas City assistants.
Bienemy has overseen some of the most prolific offenses in the NFL since he took over as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator in 2018. He has not only gotten the best out of Patrick Mahomes as a quarterback but Travis Kelce as a tight end and Tyreek Hill as a receiver. Now he’s maximizing what he has in Clyde Edwards-Helaire as a running back.
As a disciple of Andy Reid, his potential is great.
Robert Saleh
If Chicago wants to go with a defensive mind at head coach, they could turn to San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
Saleh has served in that post since 2017. It took a couple of years, but his work with the defense paid off last year when he was named Coordinator of the Year by Sporting News.
San Francisco now ranks seventh in team defense in 2020, continuing with last year’s trend (except for a drubbing at the hands of the Miami Dolphins).
Brian Daboll
The loss to the Rams on Monday Night Football exposed just how lacking the Bears’ offense has been under Nagy. So why not turn to a bright offensive mind who is working wonders in Buffalo?
Brian Daboll comes from the Bill Belichick tree and has also worked under Nick Saban. He couldn’t have picked two better head coaches to learn from.
His personal track record has been strong as well. He’s been the Bills’ offensive coordinator since 2018 and has shown the ability to develop quarterback Josh Allen. The Bears could certainly use some of that magic touch at that key position.
