Ron Rivera rings victory bell, finishing his cancer treatment
In less than 24 hours, Ron Rivera has won twice. His second victory is a game-changer for both himself and so many in need of hope.
Ron Rivera and the Washington Football Team picked up a 25-3 victory against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. On Monday, Rivera won a much more important conquest.
After undergoing treatment for his battle with squamous cell cancer, Rivera finished his final session of chemotherapy Monday in Fairfax, Virginia. The 58-year-old former Panthers head coach was diagnosed with the disease earlier this year and had been going to treatment for the past seven weeks.
Like many who enter the process of chemotherapy, Rivera rang the “victory bell” and was greeted by medical staff members wearing shirts saying “Rivera Strong” to celebrate. And, like the social media man he’s become, Riverboat Ron took to the challenge to let his fans know ” how it started/how it’s going”.
Rivera’s wife, Stephanie, also took to social media to speak highly of her husband’s latest accomplishments.
Time for the next chapter in recovery for Ron Rivera.
Although finishing his final treatment, the road to recovery is far from over. Rivera will still have to attend follow-up appointments and subsequent scans to see if the chemo officially helped neutralize the spreading. However, along with coaching, one can’t help but be blown away by Rivera’s efforts both on and off the field.
One of the more beloved coaches in the league, Rivera made his mark during a nine-year stay with Carolina. He would lead the team to four postseason appearances, including an NFC title in 2015 with a league-best 15-1 record.
Currently with his new team in Washington, Rivera is 2-5, tied for second place in the NFC East. With his players likely delighted to hear the news, perhaps this will be the spark to keep Washington in contention for the postseason when it returns following a Week 8 bye.
