JD Martinez. 2. 14. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. OF. Boston Red Sox. player

One of the most shocking regressions in the shortened season was that of Martinez. A guy who has two years on his $110 million contract left and was expected to step up in the wake of the Mookie Betts trade completely fell on his face, hitting just .213 with seven home runs while providing minimal positivity on defense. His trade value is as low as ever, meaning that Houston could flip a couple of prospects to a rebuilding Boston team and hope that the former Astro rediscovers the offensive form that almost won him an MVP award in 2018.

Martinez is not a very good defender, but sacrificing Springer’s defense to get a guy who could potentially be one of the best offensive players in baseball when he gets hot is a move that Houston will likely make. Martinez is coming off a very poor season in nearly all facets, but the Astros bringing back one of the most powerful right-handed bats in the league and telling him to aim for the Crawford Boxes and train tracks above might give the offense some extra thunder that will serve them well in the playoffs.
