Low and behold, the Jordan Ta’amu experiment is finished in Chiefs Kingdom.

When the XFL ceased operations earlier this year due to COVID-19, quarterback Jordan Ta’amu was expected to have a second chance in the NFL. That chance has come and gone following Tuesday’s news.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced they released Ta’amu to clear a spot on their practice squad. The Hawaiian native will finish his time in the Chiefs Kingdom with zero snaps or appearances on the active roster.

Ta’amu became a household name during his brief stay with the St.Louis BattleHawks in the XFL’s inaugural season. As the franchise quarterback for the team with the top fanbase, the 22-year-old actually put up quality numbers, throwing for 1,050 passing yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions during the five-game stint. Ta’amu also led the league in rushing yards by a quarterback with 217 and also added a score.

Before his rise in the city that the Rams used to call home, Ta’amu signed with the Houston Texans after going undrafted in 2019. He would play in the team’s final two preseason games before being released due to roster cuts. No NFL team signed him following his release.

Does the NFL still have a home for Ta’amu?

Ta’amu might still find a home in the league due to his dual-threat mobility. In his lone season as the starting quarterback for Ole Miss, he finished with 3,918 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 8 interceptions and tacked on another 342 yards and 6 touchdowns with his legs.

Any team set to play the Texans or Baltimore Ravens this season would be wise to bring in Ta’amu for a visit. During his time on the Chiefs practice squad, Andy Reid used him as a decoy quarterback to help the defense prepare for mobile looks outside the pocket.

Organizations however could be wary of bringing him into the facility following recent events. Earlier this season, Ta’amu became the first Chiefs player to test positive for COVID-19. He would be placed on the reserve/COVID list before ultimately being released.

If Ta’amu’s time is over in the NFL, it might not be with the XFL 2.0. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently bought the league and is expecting to try to revive it for the 2021 season.
