Justin Fields’ great play as a passer has former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer giving his praise.

The Ohio State Buckeyes landed Justin Fields early in 2019 after his transfer from Georgia. A new era of Buckeyes football was starting with Ryan Day taking over for Urban Meyer and Fields was set to lead the way on offense.

He has done that and more as Fields has turned himself into an elite quarterback prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft. Anyone who thought Fields may be a run-first quarterback has been proven wrong and that includes Meyer. The former Buckeyes coach shared his praise for Fields during an appearance on Big Ten Network.

“The incredible transformation of Justin Fields (as a passer) … when Ryan Day and Corey Dennis came to me about Fields, we started thinking he was a runner-thrower,” Meyer said. “That couldn’t be further from the truth. He’s been developed into an elite thrower that happens to be electric speed and electric athlete. He’s incredible.”

Fields deserves the praise. He went 20-of-21 for 276 yards and two touchdowns in Ohio State’s opener against Nebraska. He also ran for 54 yards and a touchdown in the dominant win.

This comes after a 2019 season in which Fields threw 41 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He could have put up even bigger numbers if Ohio State didn’t blowout so many opponents.

The quarterback came to Columbus with only 39 pass attempts to his name at Georgia. Meyer was on his way out and the program decided to take a chance on a new coach and quarterback. It has worked out to perfection.

Fields is now right there with Trevor Lawrence as a top target for NFL teams needing a fresh start at quarterback in 2021. All the talk is about “tanking for Trevor.” Teams may want to listen to Meyer and put Fields at the top of the list.
