Even former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was impressed with what he saw from Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football’s offense behind quarterback Joe Milton.

We know there’s no love lost between Ohio State and Michigan, but former Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer likes what he saw from the Wolverines in their season-opening win vs. Minnesota.

Meyer now working as an analyst for FOX and Big Ten Network came away impressed by Jim Harbaugh‘s new-look offense with Joe Milton under center. One of the biggest questions facing the Wolverines in Harbaugh’s tenure, and especially so this offseason, was how well the quarterback would play and whether Harbaugh could maximize their potential.

After one game, it’s looking like Harbaugh has found his guy.

Urban Meyer is impressed with Michigan’s offense

“I went back and re-watched it and I thought (Josh) Gattis did a heck of a job,” Meyer said. “That is a legitimate spread offense and he has options. (Milton) wasn’t really an aggressive runner, but a really good runner. I think he is just going to get better. He is a giant athlete now.”

“The use of RPO, release, and the screens are outstanding,” Meyer said. “You have to have a quick release to operate that way. You got to be able to think really quickly too and he did both.”

Besides quarterback being a big question, the offensive line that had to replace four starters was just as crucial for the offensive success. Getting Jaden Mayfield back after he opted out when the season was initially canceled was a big win, but the entire unit played exceptionally well against the Gophers, paving the way for 256 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 8.3 yards per carry.

Milton completed15-of-22 passes for 225 yards with one touchdown and added 52 rushing yards and another score in the 49-24 win.

As impressed as Meyer was with Milton and the gameplan, he was in awe of the work of the offensive line that controlled the trenches.

“The offensive line, that replaced four of the last five starters, really played well,” Meyer said. “I thought this was going to be one of those down to the wire games. They dominated A to Z on that one.”
