The Champions League returns with the second game of the group stage on Wednesday. Borussia Dortmund host Zenit at Signal Iduna Park in Group F action. Dortmund were extremely disappointing in their first game, losing 3-1 to Lazio. Zenit also started the tournament with a loss, losing 2-1 to Club Brugge.
Over the past few seasons, Dortmund have been the second-best team in Germany. However, their defense has stopped them from overcoming Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Manager Lucien Favre has tried different combinations at the back and different formations but can find the right solution. While Dortmund have been able to outscore their defensive mistakes most of the time, that will eventually catch up with them.
Zenit allowed a late injury-time goal against Club Brugge that cost them points in their opening game of the Champions League. The Russian club will have to overcome that late defeat if they are going to make it out of the group stage for the first time since 2016. Manager Sergey Semak will likely set his team up to be conservative to limit the chances that the explosive Dortmund attack. Offensively, Zenit will rely on striker Artem Dzyuba to take advantage of any Dortmund slip-ups defensively. Dzyuba leads the club with seven goals and four assists in all competitions.
