Melvin Gordon speaks out for first time since DUI arrest

The Denver Broncos running back finally addresses the recent events.

Melvin Gordon has been quiet the past several weeks with the Denver Broncos. Now, he’s speaking up.

Gordon addressed the media for the first time since being arrested for the DUI earlier this month. The 27-year-old running back apologized for his actions, stating that the situation never should have occurred in the first place.

“I don’t want people to feel like ‘oh, because Melvin didn’t say anything or he didn’t speak on it, he just don’t care, he’s not apologetic about the situation.’ That’s not the case at all, obviously I try to do my best to walk a straight line and lead by example, things like that,” Gordon said, according Jeff Legwold of ESPN. “I’m a little upset I even put myself in that situation.”

According to Mike Klis of Denver’s 9News, the police report stated that Gordon was pulled over for going 71 mph in a 35 mph zone. The Broncos star did comply with the officer, but it was stated that his sobriety test did not meet the standards, eventually leading to his arrest.

Gordon is set to appear in court on a later date.

“I had a hard time just dealing with it myself, like I said, never been in trouble before,” Gordon followed. “To the people of Denver and everyone, I don’t want anyone to feel like I just don’t care, like ‘oh he got his money, he don’t care.’ I do [care], I do. I’m not happy I was in the situation.”

Melvin Gordon needs now to step up in the back half of 2020

Denver perhaps internally handled the issue when Gordon did not travel with the team to face off against the New England Patriots. Last week against the Kansas City Chiefs, he returned to action, scoring a touchdown and adding 68 yards on 17 carries to his season total.

Signing a two-year, $16 million deal this offseason, Gordon might be needed now more than ever to keep the Broncos’ season alive. One week after his return, fellow running back Phillip Linsday could miss more time following his departure against Kansas City with a concussion. Prior to that,  Lindsay had been out since Week 1 with turf toe .

For the season, Gordon has tallied 349 rushing on 82 attempts and scored four touchdowns. Maybe Sunday could be a turning point for him as Denver hosts his former team, the Los Angeles Chargers.
