Sam Darnold’s career can be saved if one of these teams trades for him

How about a California homecoming? Darnold was born in the Golden State, played high school ball in San Clemente and suited up for the USC Trojans for three collegiate seasons. Maybe a return to normalcy could do wonders for Darnold.
The San Francisco 49ers made it to Super Bowl 54 last year with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter. Despite that fact, that didn’t stop the 49ers front office from exploring the possibility of adding Tom Brady via free agency. That, of course, never happened, as they stuck with “Jimmy G.” The 2020 season has been a rollercoaster for Garoppolo. He suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 2 against Darnold’s Jets, had a terrible performance in his return against the Miami Dolphins, and bounced back the past two weeks against the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots respectively. Garoppolo hasn’t shown that he can single-handedly put the entire offense on his back to succeed, which could entice the 49ers to bring in a replacement.
Kyle Shanahan has been praised for his work with quarterbacks over the years. As offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in 2016, he coached Matt Ryan to the NFL MVP Award that year. After acquiring Garoppolo from the Patriots in 2017, the quarterback had an undefeated record with the squad.
Darnold has suffered from a lack of complementary weapons throughout his Jets career. That would all change in San Francisco, where he’d have a dynamic rushing attack, a dependable tight end in George Kittle, and receivers such as Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Bringing in Darnold could be too good for the 49ers to pass up on.
