Hey Chicago, your next beer is on Jon Lester
Jon Lester is showing his gratitude to Cubs fans by buying everyone a beer.
The Chicago Cubs achieved the impossible in 2016 by ending their long and painful title drought. Jon Lester was a key part in that quest after the team signed him to a $155 million deal before the 2015 season.
There was also an option in that contract for 2021. The Cubs could keep him at $25 million or pay a $10 million buyout. A buyout and free agency are expected and the southpaw could be pitching elsewhere next season. He has decided to stay grateful and give back to the Cubs fans who have cheered him on. How is he doing that? With some free beers.
Lester picks up the tab
This is a fun gesture from Lester and hey, a free Miller Lite is nothing to complain about. The lefty made a name for himself in Boston, but he helped Chicago return to glory and will always be a legend in the city for that reason.
There is still a chance Lester could return to the Cubs next season. He just isn’t going to get $25 million for one season with so many decisions still to make on members of the young core. Add in losses suffered by teams this season and there are going to be cuts made around the league.
Luckily for Lester, he is not strapped for cash. As long as bars aren’t flooded with people, this is a cool move and should help out the bars if they need some extra money.
The Cubs are expected to go through a bit of a transition period and the core from 2016 will not be whole. But no one can take away the memories and getting a free beer from one of the players is a fun consolation during such weird times.
