NFL DFS Bargain Bin: Week 8 Sunday Slates
NFL DFS Bargain Bin: Week 8 Sunday Slates Quarterbacks
Cam Newton, NE at BUF ($5,700-DK/$7,400-FD)
Newton is essentially the quintessential tournament value play at quarterback this week. Naturally, the chances of him being heavily rostered are miniscule after his atrocious showings over the past two games, with Week 7’s debacle against the 49ers especially standing out. However, Newton is still an above-average — and as a one-time NFL MVP, very prideful — physical talent that can thrive through both the ground and air, and he’s facing a Bills defense that’s been susceptible to quarterback production via either means thus far this season.
Newton essentially acknowledged his starting job is on the line in this contest after his recent struggles, which, when combined with his natural talent and opponent, make him a solid bet to pay off his modest salaries. Buffalo has given up a 12:4 TD: INT to quarterbacks through seven games while allowing a 68.5 percent completion rate, leading to an average of 21.2 DK/19.8 FD points surrendered per game to the position. Then, the Bills have also given up 5.0 yards per carry and two rushing touchdowns to QBs, which naturally sets up well for Newton’s skills on the ground. Given the veteran signal caller’s ability to produce fantasy points with both his legs and arm, I like Newton as a large-field GPP play in particular, even without the services of Julian Edelman (knee).
Jimmy Garoppolo, SF at SEA ($5,400-DK/$6,600-FD)
Garoppolo has been a completely different quarterback since a nightmarish performance of his own, which came in the first half of a surprising Week 5 home rout at the hands of the Dolphins. The ankle sprain that Garoppolo was hampered by during that contest now appears to have fully healed if his last two efforts are any indication — Garoppolo has completed an impressive 74.1 percent of his throws for 545 yards while averaging 33 DK/FD points against the Rams and Patriots. The Seahawks naturally make for excellent potential facilitators for continued strong production from the veteran signal caller.
Seattle has been the most vulnerable pass defense in the league throughout the season, allowing the most passing yards per game (368.7) and the second-most DK (30.6) and FD (27.8) points per contest to quarterbacks. There is a chance Jamal Adams (groin/illness) makes his return for the Seahawks in this game, but the illness he came down with Wednesday puts that in doubt for the time being. Garoppolo will also be without Deebo Samuel (hamstring), but given the talent of both Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle, plus the fact Seattle is yielding the third-most yards per drive (41.8), he’s still a strong play at his very reasonable salaries.
