Bo Nix could not have played a better game for Auburn football on Saturday afternoon.

This is the type of performance we have been hoping to see out of Bo Nix for some time.

The Auburn Tigers quarterback eviscerated the LSU Tigers defense in a 48-11 rout on The Plains. Auburn improves to 4-2 on the year, while LSU falls to 2-3 a year after a perfect national championship campaign. When Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn named Nix the starter last year over Joey Gatewood, this was what he had envisioned for the Tigers’ legacy quarterback.

Auburn better hope more great play from Bo Nix is here to stay

Auburn will be on its bye week next Saturday before its final four SEC games of the season. Though 4-2 in conference play is certainly commendable, this was the only game Auburn won without the help of the SEC officials. Ask the Kentucky Wildcats, the Arkansas Razorbacks or the Ole Miss Rebels what they think of SEC officiating this season. This win was legitimate, though.

Nix completed 18-of-24 passes for 300 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had 11 carries for 81 yards and an additional trip to pay dirt. This was the type of performance people thought he’d given them when Nix was named preseason all-conference. The combination of run and throw makes him an ideal fit in Malzahn’s dual-threat offensive scheme.

While this is a game Auburn can build momentum off heading into the bye, the Tigers only have one more gimme game the rest of the way. That will be on the road vs. the lowly Mississippi State Bulldogs. After that, the Tigers will host the Tennessee Volunteers, go to the Alabama Crimson Tide and will host the Texas A&M Aggies. Auburn will probably end up losing two of those games.

Though he doesn’t have to play at this level to beat Mississippi State, Tennessee and possibly Texas A&M, this is what it will take out of him to defeat Alabama at Bryant-Denny. He may have won the Iron Bowl last year, but Auburn tends to play up to its competition at home in a big spot. On the road, that’s a different story. They can’t win in Athens and Tuscaloosa is tough sledding.

This game may have been a breakthrough for Nix, but let’s not count on it vs. quality opponents.
