Isaac Cruz bombards Diego Magdaleno for incredible first-round KO
Diego Magdaleno hoped a win over Isaac Cruz would rejuvenate his career, but it looks like his career is at the end of the line after a first-round KO.
Veteran boxer Diego Magdaleno looked forward to fighting the younger Isaac Cruz on the undercard of the Gervonta Davis vs. Leo Santa Cruz Showtime main event, but things couldn’t have gone worse for Magdaleno.
At 34 years old, Magdaleno looked to reinvent himself. He changed his training team and felt like he had a good chance against the up and coming Cruz, but he didn’t stand a chance.
Magdaleno (32-4, 13 KOs) challenged for a major world title in 2015 but was blown out by Terry Flanagan in two rounds. The 22-year-old Cruz made even quicker work of Magdaleno.
After a brutal knockout loss to Isaac Cruz, Diego Magdaleno looks finished as a boxer
From the start of round 1, Cruz jumped all over Magdaleno. Cruz (20-1-1, 15 KOs) trapped Magdaleno along the ropes and delivered punishing hooks to his body. It wasn’t long before Magdaleno dropped to a knee under Cruz’s heavy assault.
Magdaleno made it to his feet but found himself on the ropes again. Cruz continued his attack and caught Magdaleno with a vicious right uppercut that put him down and out.
In all, it took Cruz under a minute to end Magdaleno’s night and possibly his career. Their lightweight matchup was an IBF title eliminator, which means Cruz could find himself in line for a world title shot in the new future.
