The Michigan State football Twitter account couldn’t help but post a meme at the expense of the rival Wolverines.
Last weekend was a brutal one for the Michigan State Spartans. For the first time since 2004, the Spartans lost to the once-lowly Rutgers Scarlet Knights, leaving many pressing the panic alarm at a frantic pace. But, the 2020 season is going to be the weirdest of our lifetime, so you have to take things week-to-week with your favorite college football team.
That was evident this Saturday, as Michigan State managed to defeat the rival Michigan Wolverines 27-24 at Ann Arbor to secure head coach Mel Tucker’s first-win with the program. Most importantly, the Spartans own the rights to the Paul Bunyan Trophy! Of course, Michigan State’s official Twitter account couldn’t help but pour salt in the wound of their arch-nemesis in the form of a “how it started, how it ended” meme.

The rivalry game ended well for Michigan State
Nothing hurts more than seeing your rival mock you with a popular meme format. But hey, that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
The annual rivalry was a back and forth affair, with both squads being tied at 17 points apiece in the third quarter. But, the Spartans pulled away in the form of a 51-yard field goal by Matt Coghlin in the third quarter and a 13-yard touchdown reception by Connor Heyward with five minutes remaining in regulation. The Wolverines did narrow things with a late Hassan Haskins touchdown run, but there was little time for them to make a comeback.
Michigan State now brings home the wooden trophy for the first time since 2017, when they defeated the Wolverines 14-10. However, the Wolverines do hold bragging rights in the series history, as they won 71 contests to Michigan State’s 33. Either way, the Spartans are going to proudly show off Paul Bunyan in their team facility.
