In Ricky White‘s breakout performance for Michigan State football, the Spartans upset Michigan.

The Michigan State Spartans lost their home opener vs. the Rutgers Scarlet Knights last weekend. With 0-2 staring them in the face, White’s phenomenal game as a freshman receiver helped Sparty defeat the rival Michigan Wolverines in The Big House. Clearly, we massively over-exaggerated Michigan State’s home loss to Rutgers. They are right where they should be at 1-1.

The Rocky Lombardi to Ricky White connection was sweet for Michigan State

White was a three-star recruit out of Marietta, Georgia playing in his true freshman season for Mel Tucker. With only one catch for five yards in his college debut vs. Rutgers, we were certainly pleased to see a phenomenal game out of White on Saturday. He had eight catches for 196 yards and a touchdown. Several of his plays on the receiving end from Rocky Lombardi were incredible.

It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for Michigan State. Tucker can coach, but he cut his teeth as an NFL and collegiate defensive coordinator before getting his shot to sit in the big chair. However, he seems to have going good for him in the passing game. Upsetting Michigan in The Big House should not go unnoticed. Man, the Big Ten getting interesting only two weeks in.

This is a rebuilding year in East Lansing and everybody should know that. However, upsetting a huge in-state rival on the road only two weeks into the campaign has certainly silenced some of Tucker’s early critics. The Big Ten is wild this season, so maybe the Spartans have a chance to make some noise in a division totally in flux after the juggernaut Ohio State Buckeyes, of course.

White could not have had a better breakout game for Michigan State in a huge spot Saturday.
