3 quarterbacks who can rescue the Eagles from Carson Wentz
By Scott Rogust
What if the Eagles front office goes completely scorched Earth and selects one of the premier quarterback prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft class? Hey, general manager Howie Roseman drafted Hurts this year, so we can’t rule out anything with this team!
Based on the projected draft order, the Eagles stand no shot of selecting Trevor Lawrence of Clemson or Justin Fields of Ohio State. But there is one other quarterback in the top-tier that could be available to the Eagles, and it’s Trey Lance. Yeah, we know what you’re thinking Eagles fans, “why would we draft another quarterback from North Dakota State?” Well, Lance is a different quarterback.
While Lance’s main knock is that he plays in the FCS, which is far from the most competitive college football conference in the country, his skillset is too hard to ignore. In 2019, Lance completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns and zero interceptions, while rushing for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns on 169 carries. Lance only played in one game this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but he impressed. Lance recorded 149 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while accumulating 143 yards and two scores on the ground in the team’s 39-28 win over Central Arkansas.
Lance has received hefty praise from one of the respected draft analysts in the game. NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah compared Lance to one Andrew Luck in terms of athleticism and maturity. If that’s the case and Lance falls into the Eagles laps early in the first round (if they don’t make the playoffs this year), we wouldn’t necessarily fault them for selecting the dual-threat signal-caller.
