Heisman watch: Mac Jones rolls, Justin Fields near-perfect, Travis Etienne makes history
Heisman watch candidate No. 10: Grayson McCall, QB, Coastal Carolina
If Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall hadn’t been forced to miss last week’s game due to injury, he might actually be higher than No. 10 on the rankings. Yes, he’s a freshman signal-caller at a Group of 5 school but the Chanticleers are one of the handful of remaining unbeaten teams in the country right now and the young quarterback is a tremendous reason as to why that’s the case.
In a dominant 51-0 win over Georgia State, McCall was dominant as he completed 18-of-24 passes for 254 yards with four touchdowns and no picks while also adding a rushing touchdown as well. McCall now has 1,184 yards, 15 touchdowns and only one interception along with three rushing scores at the helm of an undefeated team. How can you not give him love in the Heisman race at this point?
Heisman watch candidate No. 9: Ulysses Bentley IV
Shane Buechele dropped out of the Heisman rankings last week after he and SMU suffered their first loss of the season and the quarterback had a rough outing by his standards, throwing for under 250 yards with just one score and a pick. In Week 9, however, the Mustangs bounced back but, rather than Buechele jumping back into the race, it’s running back Ulysses Bentley IV taking his spot.
Bentley dominated the Midshipmen on Saturday, rushing 25 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the team in receiving with four catches for 68 yards. On the year, Bentley has 695 yards rushing with 10 touchdowns on just 115 carries while also notching 15 receptions for 128 yards. He’s been a lights-out force and deserves plenty of recognition for his efforts.
