A kick like that likely happens once in a lifetime. Too bad it had to happen to Las Vegas

One has to feel for Las Vegas Raiders’ kicker Daniel Carlson. Sure, missing a field goal will happen from time to time, but missing it in Cleveland due to the weather is just comical.

During Las Vegas’ opening drive, the Raiders were forced to settle for a 41-yard field goal attempt. With the winds at FirstEnergy Stadium blowing stronger than most days, Carlson knew that he would have to aim right for it to stay left.

Well, let’s just say the kick looked more like a slider than anything. Just a bit outside for Carlson and the Raiders to begin their day without a score.

How bad is the wind in Cleveland?

Sure, looking at Carlson’s kick will lead to a good laugh, but look beyond and at the goal post. As the ball continues to pull left, so does the post, swinging and knocking into the ball to have an echo bellowing into the stadium.

Carlson actually did everything right on the play. The problem is, you can’t control Mother Nature and how she wants to act any given Sunday. The harsh reality is that John Gruden’s excellent opening drive will end on a sour note.

Carlson’s numbers on the season has actually been quite impressive for the Raiders’ special teams. Through six games, the former Auburn product has gone 13-of-14 on attempts with three coming over 50 yards. He’s also 18-of-19 on point after attempts.

It will be interesting to see if Gruden and Kevin Stefanski decide to go for it on 4th-and-short instead of trying for a long field goal. Today might be a relaxed day for the legs if the wind doesn’t chill out by halftime.
