The Warriors unveiled a City Edition jersey that honors the “We Believe” era.
Before the “We Believe” Golden State Warriors took down the No. 1 seed Dallas Mavericks as a No. 8 seed in 2006-07, the Warriors’ jersey chance ahead of the 1996 season was synonymous with losing. The navy blue and orange combination, coupled with a blue Warrior holding a lightning bolt spear, was transformed from the mark of a team that had 13 consecutive winless seasons into the sign of a pack of loveable underdogs.
The Warriors might be in San Francisco, but they’re remaining close to their Oakland roots where they played for 47 seasons, as their “City Edition” jersey for this season features the old color scheme with “Oakland” emblazoned on the front in gold.
These alternate jerseys can be hit or miss on account of some teams trying too hard, but Golden State smartly decided to go for a sharp, retro look honoring the uniforms the team wore from 1997-2010 that the fans can get behind.
The Warriors are looking to start a winning tradition in San Francisco after struggling last season
Golden State, who rocked the throwback uniforms in Kevin Durant’s final regular-season game as a Warrior, decided to cross the Bay Bridge and make the move from Oakland to San Francisco and the new Chase Center after winning five consecutive Western Conference championships. They tried to pay homage to their Rick Barry roots by rocking San Francisco throwbacks last season, but the “We Believe” team isn’t as deep a cut as those teams from the 70s.
Injuries prevented Golden State from winning much during their first season in San Francisco as they ended up with the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, but things are looking up now that Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have returned from injuries.
While Steph’s Warriors might be better and more successful, few, if any, Warrior teams are more beloved than that one plucky eight seed led by Baron Davis.
