Trevor Lawrence will be there in person for Clemson’s football game at Notre Dame.
Despite testing positive for COVID-19, Trevor Lawrence will be in attendance in South Bend.
Lawrence did not play last week vs. the Boston College Eagles and will not play on Saturday night vs. the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Clemson Tigers starting quarterback was the frontrunner to win the Heisman Trophy before his positive COVID test. While he may not win the award because of it, he’ll still go No. 1 in the 2021 NFL Draft and he’ll be in attendance in South Bend…wait, what?
Trevor Lawrence can be on the sideline but cannot play on Saturday for Clemson
So Lawrence can’t play on Saturday night because he tested positive for the coronavirus two weeks ago? Okay, got it. But why is he allowed to travel to South Bend, Indiana from Clemson, South Carolina to watch D.J. Uiagalelei start in place of him? If Lawrence isn’t healthy enough to face the Golden Domers, then how is he healthy enough to travel with the team this week?
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney explained all this, giving us a better understanding of the ACC’s coronavirus protocols. “Trevor will not be able to play. I want to go ahead and get that out there,” said Swinney. “He’s doing great. He Zoomed with the team last night. I talked to him this morning. He feels like he can play today. He’s doing well, but obviously there’s protocol.”
“He’s not allowed to do that simply because of the protocol that’s in place. It’s in place to make sure that he can return and play safely. You have 10 days and then you have the cardiac part. So he won’t be able to get through that in time to play next week.”
“Hopefully everything will go well and he’ll be ready to get back in practice after the Notre Dame game, be ready to get back at it versus Florida State. Hate that for him. Hopefully he’ll be able to travel with us still and help those guys on the sideline, but definitely will not be able to play in the game.”
In short, Lawrence will have made it through the 10-day quarantine period after testing positive last Wednesday, but will not have sufficed the cardiac evaluation part of the ACC’s coronavirus testing protocol. The plan is for Clemson’s star quarterback to be back in action vs. the rival Florida State Seminoles next Saturday. Hopefully, he will be okay and Clemson will still be undefeated.
So if you see Lawrence and his blonde locks on the Clemson sidelines, this is why he can be there.
