Brandon Aiyuk has the potential to have a big fantasy day vs. the Green Bay Packers.

It will be a bit of a skeleton crew when the San Francisco 49ers face the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football in Week 9. Though the 49ers had a positive test for the coronavirus, this game is expected to be played at its normal time. With the 49ers down several key offensive players, look for rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to take advantage of his expanded role.

The Fantasy Footballers recognize the 49ers’ offense may not be anything special vs. the NFC North contenders, even if the game is at home. Green Bay is coming off a tough loss at home to the rival Minnesota Vikings, so the Packers will want to set the tone early in this primetime affair at Levi’s Stadium. Aiyuk will need to show up early because balls will surely be coming his way.

With tight end George Kittle out and Nick Mullens starting in place of Jimmy Garoppolo, this is a big opportunity for Aiyuk to show he was worth the first-round pick coming out of Arizona State. While some people might believe Mullens is the better quarterback over Garppolo anyway, this will only be reaffirmed by a great game coming from Aiyuk. What are the odds of this happening?

The volume play here is the best thing going for Brandon Aiyuk

The big key here for Aiyuk is strictly the volume play. While the Packers are better on paper than the 49ers, who else is Mullens going to be throwing the football to? He does not have Dante Pettis any more and Kendrick Bourne was the player to test positive for the virus in the lead up to the game. With Raheem Mostert out as well, Aiyuk will be a part of the offense by necessity.

Even if the Packers blow out an injury-riddled 49ers team, Aiyuk benefits considerably because San Francisco would have to pass the ball to play catchup if the 49ers go down big. Again, who else is Mullens going to throw the football to? In short, Aiyuk is an underrated fantasy play this week because of the amount of targets he is sure to receive, but should you start him, though?

We are all at that point of the fantasy season where a good chunk of your starting lineup might have players on a bye. If you were to start Aiyuk, do so as a receiver because you don’t want to use up your flex days before you have to. This is a high-risk, high-reward sort of proposition, but do you potentially want to leave 10 catches for 100 yards and a touchdown on the table in Aiyuk?
