Detroit Pistons: Grant Hill

Grant Hill was destined for basketball greatness. He attended Duke for all four years of college and won back-to-back NCAA championships. Then he was picked third overall by the Detroit Pistons in 1994. Finally, Hill enjoyed six healthy seasons in the Motor City: 435 of his 1,026 career games, 21.6 points, 7.9 boards, 6.3 assists and 1.6 steals. The 6-foot-8 guard shot 47.6 percent from the field and 74.6 percent from the free-throw line.

If Hill remained healthy his entire career, there would’ve been an argument among the NBA universe that he was LeBron James before LeBron James. Although he wasn’t as dominant as the King himself, Hill was a great all-around player who was most dangerous inside the arc. He was particularly effective at driving and kicking as along with his 6.3 assists, he scored on 62.9 percent of his shots between zero and three feet.

Hill displayed perfect technique as a dunker. The 6-foot-8 guard used his string-bean legs to his advantage and easily glided to the basket in two strides. Then he would leap into the air and there was little to nothing defenders could do. In the air, Hill was just as quick with his slams as he was violent.

Similar to some of the other dunkers on this list, Hill was more comfortable with his right hand. But he was very quick with his motion and would also try to tear down the rim. Unfortunately, he only had so many dunks in him as a lingering ankle injury derailed his career. It’s a miracle that Hill was able to play in the NBA as long as he did (1994-2013).
