3. Javier Baez comes to the Bronx
Both Lindor and Story are better players than Baez, but he lands higher on this list because the Cubs are more likely to accept an established veteran in exchange for their starting shortstop than either the Indians or Rockies. Chicago isnāt a franchise thatās afraid to absorb a big name star into their locker room.
None of this is to say that Baez wouldnāt give the Yankees a solid upgrade at the shortstop position. Heās not going to win a Gold Glove anytime soon, but heās better than Gleyber Torres in that regard. His ability to hit for power would only make New Yorkās lineup even more potent.
The most interesting question about this potential transaction is whether or not the Yankees would accept a one-for-one swap. Itās likely the Cubs would balk at the idea of including extra assets in the deal because of Judgeās injury-history. That might force the Yankees to accept only getting Baez back in exchange for their popular slugger.
The most likely outcome with Baez is that Chicago finds a way to ink him to a long-term deal in the relatively near future. If they donāt, the Cubs front office wonātā hesitate to put him on the trade block. A Judge for Baez swap could satisfy everyone involved.
