4. New York Jets

The Jets are moving quickly toward having the No. 1 pick in the 2021 draft, as their ineptitude is set to overtake other tanking efforts with 0-16 a real possibility. Despite general manager Joe Douglas’ recent profession that Sam Darnold is the quarterback of the future, when it’s time to pick up Darnold’s fifth-year option come the spring that will say it all. At this point Darnold would surely welcome a change of scenery.

The Jets may get Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 pick in April, unless he uses his leverage to move them off him or push them to trade the pick. But the Jets should come out of the draft with a quarterback one way or another, it’s just a matter of when and who. Having a proverbial veteran place holder for all or part of a season might become part of the offseason plan.

The Jets currently have the most cap space in the league for 2021 ($81.278 million). Spending that money wisely is a different part of the conversation. But a trade for someone like Garoppolo, with his fully guaranteed salary gone after this year and no commitment to him for 2022 (as previously mentioned, $1.4 million in dead money if he’s released or traded), might make sense. Of course waiting for the possibility the 49ers cut him would make even more sense, but it’s also likely Garoppolo wouldn’t see the Jets as an ideal landing spot.
