Bears’ Mitchell Trubisky could be facing shoulder surgery after fluke injury
By Mike Luciano
Mitchell Trubisky is dealing with an injury that could require surgery.
Matt Nagy’s decision to bring in Mitchell Trubisky for a play against the New Orleans Saints completely backfired. Trubisky’s cameo ended abruptly after he injured his shoulder following a three-yard run. The injury, which isn’t that dissimilar to the one that cost him two games in his breakout 2018 season, might require a procedure that could sideline him for some time.
Ian Rapoport is reporting that while Trubisky’s shoulder injury is severe enough that surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff is an option, the Bears haven’t made a final decision on the former No. 2 overall pick.
Mitchell Trubisky was hurt on his first snap since being benched
While he started the season off with three touchdowns in a comeback victory over the Detroit Lions, Trubisky soon regressed to the mean, throwing three interceptions over his next six quarters of play, leading to a benching in favor of Nick Foles. While the Bears are 3-0 in games started by Trubisky and 2-3 in games started by Foles, Trubisky’s arm was not carrying them to wins.
Trubisky only played one play against the Saints, and it was that ill-fated three-yard keeper on an option play that ended with Trubisky’s shoulder crunched in between two defenders. Matt Nagy’s decision to do this was almost inexcusable, as taking your starting quarterback out for one gimmicky play has now left them without a backup.
Tyler Bray, Matt Nagy’s pupil that he’s kept around since the Kansas City days, is expected to be promoted from the practice squad to fill in.
The 2020 season just keeps going from bad to worse for Trubisky. The best-case scenario for him with regards to the remainder of this year is resting up in order to heal his injury and leaving Chicago for a place that will give him one last chance as a starting quarterback.
