Canelo Alvarez is a free agent according to trainer Eddy Reynoso
Canelo Alvarez is a free agent, according to a tweet from his trainer Eddy Reynoso. His time with DAZN and protomer Golden Boy appears to be over.
The drama surrounding the contractual obligations of arguably the best boxer in the world, Canelo Alvarez, appears to be over.
In the late morning hours of Nov. 6, Alvarez’s trainer and manager, Eddy Reynoso, tweeted a message announcing Alvarez’s free-agent status.
“In my role as manager and coach of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, I allow myself to communicate to the boxing community and all our fans, that starting today, November 6th, “Canelo” becomes a free agent, so we are ready to continue with his boxing career,” read Reynoso’s tweet.
Alvarez sued Golden Boy Promotions, DAZN, and Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya in September, seeking a minimum of $280 million for numerous alleged violations of their contractual agreement.
Now that Canelo Alvarez is a free agent, he has to decide if he wants to sign with another promoter or move ahead as his own boss
Alvarez’s suit was denied due to filing errors but was refiled a short time later. Alvarez, DAZN, and Golden Boy attended arbitration meetings, but they did not resolve the issue.
Reynoso’s tweet doesn’t offer much clarity as to how Alvarez became a free agent. Alvarez, Golden Boy, DAZN, and De La Hoya haven’t offered up any public response to Reynoso’s statement.
Alvarez was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, who negotiated streaming rights to his fights with DAZN. DAZN angered Alaverez by limiting his say in future opponents. They also didn’t want to pay their contracted $40 million licensing fee for bouts against opponents that they viewed as less than premium.
It’s hard to tell where Alvarez goes from here. He could link up with another promoter or jumpstart his own promotional company and license viewing rights to his fights with a broadcasting provider of his choice.
Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) is 30 years old and the current WBA “regular'” super middleweight champion. He hasn’t fought since knocking out Sergey Kovalev last November. He’s in the prime of his career and is ready to resume combat, according to Reynoso.
