Gardner Minshew is officially out for Jaguars, and it’s Jake Luton time
The Jaguars have officially ruled out Gardner Minshew and that means rookie Jake Luton gets the start at quarterback.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have lost six straight games after a season-opening victory, and the news only gets worse from there.
Quarterback Gardner Minshew, who was seen as good enough to move on from Nick Foles, is officially out this week after reportedly playing with a fracture in his hand for some time. That means it is time for another rookie quarterback to get a shot in Jacksonville.
Jaguars turning to a rookie
Minshew being out meant it was a competition this week between rookie Jake Luton and veteran Mike Glennon. The rookie came out on top, and that may say a lot about Glennon.
Luton is sixth-round pick out of Oregon State and is following the same path Minshew did last season. Both were Pac-12 signal-callers taken in the sixth round, and now Luton has a chance to turn the season around for the Jaguars.
Minshew hiding a serious injury goes along with his personality. He has openly been a gritty guy and plenty of people will commend him for trying to tough out an injury. He was also trying to prove he is indeed the quarterback of the future for the Jaguars.
Another high draft pick for the Jaguars in 2021 may lead the team to target a top quarterback. This could also mean a new coaching staff and there has to be some frustration with Minshew after his injury could have led to some losses if he had trouble throwing the ball.
A matchup with the Houston Texans is on the schedule for Sunday, and the division rival took the first meeting by the final score of 30-14. Minshew actually threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns in that game, so the problems may run much deeper than at quarterback for Doug Marrone’s team.
