WWE SmackDown: Sasha Banks retains and Carmella attacks

WWE SmackDown continued the developments leading into Survivor Series along with seeing Carmella attack Sasha Banks after her match.

The Survivor Series stage continues to be set as the week’s past heading to the pillar event. This week on SmackDown not only was that story further developed, but there was a major title match between Sasha Banks and Bayley scheduled for the evening.

That SmackDown women’s title match kicked off the night. Banks and Bayley took center stage as soon as the show started. The ladies went at each other’s throat right from the start. Banks had the early advantage in the match, using her speed to stay one step ahead of the former champion. Bayley would not go away, turning things around initially by causing Banks to land face first on the ring apron.

After a big slash from the apron to the floor, Banks controlled much of the match after this point. She stayed on Bayley, even hitting the Frog Splash but that was not enough to win the match. It looked like Bayley had won things after a Bayley-to-Belly, but Banks kicked out. She even kicked out after an elbow drop from the top rope.

They went through a series of maneuvers with Bayley attempting to steal moves from Banks. But it would be Banks hitting the Banks Statement in the middle of the ring and force Bayley to submit and keep her title.

The second match of the night was a singles match between Rey Mysterio and Baron Corbin. Corbin tried to get a quick win by hitting a spinebuster to start off the match. Mysterio was never able to get out of the blocks entirely, eating a lot of offense from the bigger Corbin. Mysterio was able to get in some moves of his own, but Corbin broke out a unique variation of the back breaker that nearly split Mysterio in two.

Mysterio looked like he was on his way to winning the title, but Seth Rollins did just enough to get under Mysterio’s skin. It became worse once Buddy Murphy and Aalyah came out to ring side, doing enough to distract Mysterio right into an End of Days, giving Corbin the victory.

Ruby Riott, Natalya and Zelina Vega paired off for a shot to make it onto the Survivor Series team. This was a fast-paced, scramble of a match where each woman had their moments early. Riott showed a moment of high intelligence. Natalya locked in the Sharpshooter on Vega but Riott slid in and locked in a submission as well. Natalya did not notice and let go, while Riott cranked on the hold, forcing Vega to tap.

Seth Rollins and Otis also had their own opportunities to get onto the SmackDown Survivor Series team. Otis showed off the power differences quickly, tossing Rollins around like a pillow. Buddy Murphy came out to ringside but did not initially get involved in the match.

Rollins was landing some heavy strikes to Otis, but Otis would eat all those shots unfazed. Murphy jumped up on the apron and it looked like he was going to attack Otis. But Rollins used that opening to land a Superkick into the Curb Stomp to get the pin on Otis and join the Survivor Series team.

Jey Uso and Kevin Owens had beef backstage which led to them facing off in a singles match. This was a back-and-forth match that was every bit as scrappy as a bar fight. Owens would get the upper hand, especially after a big splash onto Uso from the apron. Owens was not able to keep that advantage when the two men got back into the ring.

Paul Heyman came out to the ring which lite an unnerving fire under Uso. Owens landed a Senton Bomb and looked like he was headed to victory, but Uso kicked out. Owens would even hit the Pop-Up Powerbomb but Uso got his foot on the ropes. Roman Reigns music would hit, and the distraction allowed Uso to land a low blow. Superkick to Splash combo gave Uso the victory.
