Clemson fans taunt Trevor Lawrence with Jets chant to convince him to return to school
By Mark Powell
If there’s any way to scare Trevor Lawrence straight, Clemson fans found it
Lawrence is noncommittal about whether or not he’ll declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. As the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck, it’d be surprising if the Clemson product opted to stay another year with Dabo Swinney and Co. Yet, awaiting him should he go pro may very well be the New York Jets, arguably the worst-run organization in professional football today.
The Jets would dramatically improve with Lawrence at the helm, but Adam Gase is the worst thing that could happen to his early career. Clemson fans know Lawrence’s choice is delicate, and are trying to sway him in (what they believe) is the right direction.
Lawrence putting off his pro career still seems unlikely
Whether it be a financial ploy or an act to scare the Jets, Lawrence is unwilling to commit to the 2021 NFL Draft. The Clemson Tigers are among the favorites to win the College Football Playoff this season, and would be in a similar position in 2021 should he come back. Lawrence is revered on campus, and for good reason, as he brought a National Title to Clemson in his freshman season.
The Jets are an unattractive landing spot despite the audience they would attract should they draft Lawrence. They have next to no building blocks, and fail to see the obvious issues with their head coach and general manager. Even the Giants have a better outlook over the next five seasons than the Jets.
Lawrence has three choices: He can either stay in school, declare for the draft, or attempt to control his landing spot this April in similar fashion to Eli Manning in 2004. All are risky, but Lawrence holds the cards given his overwhelming talent and the need for elite quarterbacks in the NFL.
