The Masters sleeper No. 4: Jordan Spieth (+7000)

This is undoubtedly the most uneasy and controversial inclusion on this list of sleepers and it doesn’t take long to see why. Jordan Spieth has lost his way. He used to be one of the elite ball-strikers in the world but now seemingly has no idea where the ball is going if he’s outside of 30 yards. It should be said that his game around the greens has saved him more than you can describe.

So what then would lead to the belief that he could come to the hallowed grounds of Augusta and turn that around? Well, it certainly begins with his course history. Not only has Spieth already worn the Green Jacket once in his career, he has a long, storied history with this tournament. Spieth had one of the worst moments of his career in this major but still has three top-three finishes in addition to his victory and has never finished worse than T21.

Again, there is no statistical model that looks at recent form that will speak favorably of Spieth as he comes into The Masters in 2020. This season, he ranks 222nd in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, 227th in Strokes Gained: Approach and 123rd in Strokes Gaines: Putting. It’s hard to overstate how unreliable and, frankly, bad a player who was one of the world’s best has been as of late.

Yet, if there’s any place that Spieth could possibly turn it around, wouldn’t it be Augusta? After all, even when the struggles were going on last year, he still finished at that T21 mark. Maybe the trip to this tournament will ignite the magic we once saw from the still-young Texan.

Is it a safe bet to make? Probably not. But it’s a situation that you can’t overlook when talking bout sleepers.
