NBA Draft 2020: 5 potential second-round steals
2. Payton Pritchard
Scouts that make their evaluations solely on the basis of athletic traits won’t like Pritchard in the slightest. That’s not the proper way to evaluate this sort of player though. The former Oregon star is a prospect that deserves a second look from teams looking for help at guard.
Admittedly, four-year prospects like Pritchard may not have the same level or projection as younger prospects. He will not suddenly blossom into an electric athlete who is capable of dominating NBA games. Pritchard can, however, give a quality team a major boost with his ability to handle the ball and make shots from the perimeter.
Prospects who shoot over 41 percent from behind the arc on the same number of attempts that Pritchard shouldered deserve consideration late in the first round. He’ll get looks in that range, but it’s still more likely that he will fall into the second round on draft night.
At worst, Pritchard is going to be a guard who can help his team by stretching the floor with his shooting ability. That’s enough to make him a quality rotation player. If he proves he can be a quality playmaker at the point guard position his value will skyrocket. That’s a great range of outcomes for a potential second-round pick.
