Pick Analysis. player. Scouting Report. . . New York Mets. 1.. 3

The Mets are clearly in the market for a catcher this offseason, with rumored interest in Yadier Molina. At the top of the market at the position, the Mets are an easy suitor for J.T. Realmuto.

New Mets’ owner Steve Cohen is ready to pour plenty of resources into the organization. An active offseason is coming, as most other teams look to reduce payroll (via trades, non-tenders, etc.) and slow-play free agency.

Rather than overpaying an older catcher like Molina or paying up to get Realmuto, the Mets could mine cheaper depths to get someone behind the plate. Then they can make bigger splashes elsewhere (Francisco Lindor? Trevor Bauer? George Springer?… Yu Darvish?). It’s impossible to rule the Mets out of anything or anyone right now, via free agency or trade.

Doing business with the Yankees was something the Wilpons were not open to doing, as a little brother might not want to do business with their big brother. Cohen probably doesn’t have the same hesitation as he takes over ownership of the Mets, especially if it means upgrading a need area on the field. Trading for Sanchez accomplishes that, and does it without breaking the bank on a big contract (at least yet).
