The Reds are a possible trade suitor for Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor, and the door is wide open for a move to add a shortstop with Freddy Galvis hitting free agency.

A large concern for the Reds regarding Lindor is the big contract he’s in line for as he heads toward free agency after the 2021 season. If they end up re-signing Trevor Bauer, who seems open to anything including returning to the Reds, then the prospect of Lindor as a one-year rental grows. Trading prime assets for Lindor automatically comes with the ability and willingness to give him a big long-term deal.

After posting a team batting average of .212 and a team OPS of .715 during the 2020 regular season, and being shut out in two postseason games, the Reds need to bolster their offense. Lindor is a nice idea, even with the hefty cost on both ends, and the Reds can make a solid offer for him.

But on a shorter deal than Lindor will ultimately command, even if Semien’s agent thinks a $100 million deal is in the cards (presumably over five years), the Reds could shift their attention to other options easily. If Semien can hit 27 and 33 home runs playing around half his games in Oakland, with another chunk of games in pitcher-friendly parks elsewhere in the AL West, imagine what he could do in the bandbox that is Great American Ballpark.
