4. Patrick Williams

Williams is an intriguing prospect, but the idea that he should be drafted in the same range as teammate Devin Vassell is laughable. Guys with his athleticism that only average 9.2 points per game during their college career are not ready to be high-level offensive players in the NBA.

Teams are attracted to Williams due to his solid combination of size, length, and functional athleticism. There’s a strong chance that he blossoms into a guy who can guard multiple positions with reasonable effectiveness.

His bust potential comes down to the reality that his offensive game has a long way to go before it even approaches average at the professional level. His shot from three isn’t necessarily broken, but he still only shot 32 percent from distance last season at Florida State. Add in the fact that his effective field goal percentage was under 50 percent and it’s obvious that he isn’t ready to fulfill the “3” in 3-and-D.

Williams is worth the risk at the bottom of the first round, but selecting him anywhere near the top 10 is a gamble that’s not worth taking. There’s a significant probability that he never becomes anything more than a mediocre jack of all trades at the next level. That’s not what teams want from their first-round picks.
