WWE SmackDown: Drew McIntyre wins unsanctioned main event
WWE SmackDown is heading into Survivor Series to battle for brand supremacy. Friday’s action continued the stories leading into this month’s PPV event.
SmackDown is heading into Survivor Series needing to fill the void of the final slot on the elimination tag team match. Not only was that story the focal point, but there was a lot of action to look forward to throughout the evening.
Sami Zayn is set for a major challenge against Bobby Lashley at Survivor Series. But before he could get to that match, he had to get through former United States champion, Apollo Crews. Zayn had to deal with a wrestler that brings agility and power to the table, which resulted to Zayn being on the defense early in the match. However, it would be Zayn’s intellect that helped him win the match as he tricked Crews in getting stuck in the ring structure, forcing a count out that gave Zayn the win.
WWE went back to another rehash of a rivalry between Dolph Ziggler and Otis. The two had another match on Friday which ended with Otis winning. Ziggler was able to get in some offense of his own, including hitting the Zig Zag. But Otis kicked out and land the Caterpillar, leading into the Vader Bomb from the top rope to secure the pin fall.
Seth Rollins has tormented the Rey Mysterio family for the better part of 2020. On Friday, the two men battled each other in a no-holds barred match. Mysterio was in control early in this match but it did not take long for Rollins’s underhanded tactics to take over. They battled outside the ring and by the time they got back into the ring, Rollins was dominating in the match.
Mysterio was able to pick up the pace, grounding Rollins with a bulldog, but that would not be enough to keep Rollins off the offensive. This match was supposed to the “final chapter” between the two and that was clear when the weapons started to come out. It looked like Rollins had Murphy’s backup, but the former “Disciple” turned on Rollins, allowing Mysterio to hit the 619, Frog Splash and get the victory via pin fall.
The SmackDown women’s Survivor Series team had a Fatal-Four way to determine the final member. Liv Morgan, Natalya and Tamina were joined by Chelsea Green. Each woman had her moments in this match, but none were able to stay in control for extend periods of time. There were moments when it looked like anyone would win, but it was Liv Morgan who pulled out a victory when she pinned Tamina.
SmackDown was not light on surprises as former WWE champion; Drew McIntyre made a surprise appearance on Friday. He and Jey Uso ended up in an unsanctioned match as the main event. McIntyre controlled the smaller man in Jey for much of the early going of the match.
McIntyre could not keep Jey down for the entire match. It looked like Uso would rally but McIntyre laid Jey out once again. Roman Reigns came down to ring side and caused a distraction that Jey was able to use to get the match in his favor. Jey took too long out the outside as McIntyre recovered and landed the Claymore, dropping Jey to pin him for the win.
