Ben Roethlisberger was activated from the COVID-19 list on Saturday.

Big Ben had a week to rest up from from any prevailing ailments, which includes a knee injury suffered against the Dallas Cowboys just last week. Because of an interaction with tight end Vance McDonald, who contracted the COVID-19 virus, Roethlisberger had to sit out as a precaution, missing a week of practice as a result.

But don’t think Roethlisberger was getting a break from work. Instead, Big Ben had to take over home schooling duties for his kids.

Roethlisberger has three children — Ben, Bodie and Baylee — with his wife Ashley. While his job is to lead the Steelers on the gridiron, his primary influence is as a father. So, as Roethlisberger put it, a week at home doesn’t mean a week of relaxation.

Steelers have to be careful with Roethlisberger

At 37 years old, the Steelers have to remain cautious with their quarterback, who is just a year removed from elbow surgery. An elbow injury kept Big Ben out for the majority of the 2019 season, and while he appears to have fully recovered, he’s taken some uncomfortable hits so far this year.

The drop-off in quarterback play from Roethlisberger to the likes of Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges is dramatic. So, while the Steelers are off to a tremendous start to the season, they remain fragile because of Roethlisberger’s internal struggle to stay healthy year in and year out.

A week at home is a positive for Roethlisberger and the Steelers, even if he was stuck playing teacher. If anything, Mike Tomlin might want to consider wrapping him in bubble wrap moving forward.
