Kirk Ferentz and Iowa trolled the heck out of PJ Fleck and Minnesota
After a dominating win over Minnesota on Friday night, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz trolled the heck out of PJ Fleck and the Gophers.
The Iowa Hawkeyes beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 35-7 on Friday night. Iowa has now won that rivalry game, with the coveted “Floyd of Rosedale” as the prize, a record six years in a row. Going back a little further, Iowa has won eight of the last nine and 16 of the last 20 in the rivalry.
Gophers coach PJ Fleck kept his starters in the game Friday night, presumably to avoid a shutout (and what would have been just the fourth shutout of his coaching career). He took a timeout, and Minnesota scored in the final minute on a touchdown pass from Tanner Morgan to Rashod Bateman.
Then, Ferentz proceeded to use all three of his timeouts in the waning seconds. Per ESPN’s Adam Rittenburg, Ferentz gave his reasoning for the move.
Kirk Ferentz goes all-in to troll Fleck and the Gophers
“They called a timeout, I guess, to get a look at what we were doing and reconsider,” Ferentz said. “So we just wanted to make sure we got a good look at what they were doing. No sense in taking them on the bus with us. [The media] have reminded me of that a couple of times over the last 22 years.
“Figured we’d take Floyd with us and leave the timeouts here.”
After losing their first two games to Purdue and Northwestern by a total of five points, the Hawkeyes have beaten Michigan State and Minnesota by a combined score of 84-14 over the last two weeks. A typically reserved and close to the vest Ferentz went all-in to troll Fleck, while also reminding everyone how the Hawkeyes have ruled the rivalry with the “figured we’d take Floyd with us” remark.
