3. Detroit Pistons

The Pistons project to have $30 million to spend in free agency. Unlike the Knicks, it’s possible that Detroit will use that cap space to take in negative contracts via trade to add draft capital and/or young talent. A hefty chunk of that money could also be used to retain Christian Wood who served as the team’s starting center last season.

Derrick Rose is the team’s current starter at point guard, but he’s not a long-term answer for the position. The Pistons could easily look to trade him to a playoff team in exchange for a future asset prior to the start of the regular season. If that happens the Pistons would be totally devoid of quality options at the point.

They could look to address that need during the draft, but signing VanVleet would give them a young veteran to build around for years to come. The Pistons might not be far enough along in their rebuild to convince VanVleet to move to the Motor City, but they do have the financial power to outbid the competition.

Pairing VanVleet with Luke Kennard would give Detroit a starting backcourt worth building around. That would free the franchise up to spend their future resources on rebuilding their frontcourt. Landing VanVleet won’t turn the Pistons into an instant playoff team, but it could give them a big boost towards becoming a respectable team.
