The Knicks put entirely too much pressure on RJ Barrett to initiate the offense during his rookie season. Adding VanVleet to their starting lineup would do wonders to ease the offensive workload of Barrett and his young teammates.

New York also has the cap space required to land a free agent of VanVleet’s caliber. The big question they need to answer is whether or not spending big money on him is the best use of their financial resources.

In the end, the franchise’s desperation to add a big-name talent to placate fans in the Big Apple could cause them to jump into the mix with a massive offer. The challenge for New York will be convincing VanVleet that they’re ready to compete within the next several years. The roster is devoid of quality talent at the moment. VanVleet might need to suffer for a season or two of losing before the Knicks really can turn things around.

At the very least, expect New York to make a contract offer large enough to prevent any other team from landing VanVleet on a bargain deal. He may not be the player to turn the Knicks’ fortunes around, but they will be involved with him until he makes a final decision.
