In his first career start for Nebraska football, quarterback Luke McCaffrey is already getting compared to Patrick Mahomes.

The hype machine is working overtime for Nebraska quarterback Luke McCaffrey.

The Cornhuskers redshirt freshman quarterback came to Lincoln with a lot of hype as the younger brother of Christian McCaffrey from the famous football McCaffrey family. But after playing sparingly as a true freshman, he finally got his chance to show what he can do in a starring role.

McCaffrey didn’t waste any time doing some spectacular things in the first half vs. Penn State and is already eliciting comparisons to the best quarterback on the planet, Patrick Mahomes, in the process.

That’s Robert Smith comparing the left-handed toss from McCaffrey to Mahomes who has done the same in the NFL with his ambidextrous ability.

Even McCaffrey would tell the most optimistic Husker fans to slow the hype train down a bit because he’s just in the first half of his first start and has a long way to go before he’s the next Mahomes, but I won’t fault Nebraska football fans clinging to any sign of hope with a winless program that is hoping to turn the corner under Scott Frost.

McCaffrey has one throwing and one rushing touchdown as Nebraska leads Penn State 27-6 at halftime. Big things are in store for the talented quarterback who is already doing Mahomes-like things under center for the Huskers.
