Texas football: Tom Herman addresses the elephant in the room about Urban Meyer
By John Buhler
Texas football coach Tom Herman addressed the elephant in the room about his job security.
Urban Meyer has spent the last two years out of coaching after retiring from Ohio State but could he come out of retirement (again) and be the next head coach of the Texas Longhorns?
Texas football coach Tom Herman is trying to block out those rumors and talk about his job security entering this weekend’s game vs. Kansas. While Herman has underwhelmed since taking over the Texas Longhorns, Meyer has been successful everywhere he has been, including when he had Herman as his offensive coordinator for the 2015 national champion Buckeyes. Herman feels the heat but is trying to focus on his players, his team and beating Kansas this weekend.
Would Urban Meyer really leave FOX to clean up his protege’s mess at Texas?
Meyer does not need to coach another down to ensure he will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. His track record at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State speaks for itself. However, if he were to get back into coaching, it would take an undeniable blue-blood job to open up. Two may be open this winter, and one of them may be Texas. Would he take it, though?
Even if the Michigan Wolverines job opens up, Meyer cannot take it for Ohio State reasons. It is also why he could not go to a place like the Tennessee Volunteers in the SEC East for Florida reasons. While he has no attachment to any Big 12 brand, going to Texas would be a great way to ruin his coaching relationship with Herman. Then again, Texas is a top-10 job in the country.
Meyer might still call Columbus, Ohio home, but a move to Austin, Texas could certainly be in his future if that is the direction Texas wants to go in. However, the job that makes the most sense for him if he were to get back into coaching is leading the USC Trojans. That is the job.
The only program that could hold its own vs. Meyer’s Trojans would be Mario Cristobal’s Oregon Ducks. Keep in mind USC and Oregon play in opposite Pac-12 divisions. Meyer’s ability to rebuild USC would be an easier one than competing with Lincoln Riley’s Oklahoma Sooners if he was at Texas. Although it might be a tad awkward because his successor Kyle Whittingham still leads the Utah Utes, who now call the Pac-12 South home these days.
Overall, Herman has no reason to hear the Meyer to Texas rumors because it does not serve him and they are not all that realistic. Herman needs to focus on destroying the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday before a huge game vs. Matt Campbell’s Iowa State Cyclones the day after Thanksgiving. If Herman does fall to Iowa State and Kansas State in back-to-back weeks, he could be out at UT.
Herman must finish the 2020 season strong to put to rest the Meyer to Texas rumors officially.
