I’m not a middle child, but I like to think I have some restraint.

Gelo Ball had a rough night. Just minutes after his brother LaMelo was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, reality sunk in for Gelo.

He was the family basketball failure. Every sports family trio has one — look no further than the Manning family. There’s Peyton, Eli and…Cooper. This doesn’t mean Gelo isn’t set up for success in his own life, it just won’t come through the National Basketball Association, no matter how hard his dad tries to force it down his throat.

After Lonzo was selected by the Lakers with the No. 2 selection in the 2017 draft, Gelo and LaMelo were next on the docket. LaVar talked up a storm, hitting every sports show that would host him, suggesting all three of his sons would be All-Star talents. Well, two-for-three isn’t bad.

NBA Twitter ruthlessly came after Gelo Ball for being the odd son out

Sure, LaVar did manage to raise two top-5 NBA Draft picks…but what about three?

All jokes aside, Gelo seems perfectly thrilled for his brother, while he pursues his own basketball dream, either in the G League or overseas. It’s a long road to an NBA opportunity, but it’s not impossible given he’s still just in his early 20’s.
