LaVar Ball, the bombastic father of top prospect LaMelo Ball, wore a hat that exuded confidence.

When it comes to the most talked-about prospect in the NBA Draft, LaMelo Ball fit the bill. He didn’t do much of the talking, but the expectation was that his father, LaVar, would. We saw this schtick three years ago when Lonzo Ball was selected with the second-overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was no huge event inside an arena, which meant there was zero chance that LaVar would steal the spotlight from his son. But he did find a way to upstage him.

During the event, there was live camera feed from inside the Ball residence, where viewers saw LaVar sitting next to his son while wearing a face mask. Even though he didn’t speak, he let his “I told you so” hat do all the the talking, as he watched his youngest son get drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the third-overall pick.

LaVar’s hat spoke true volumes

Come on, did you expect anything else from “Father Ball?” If the hat accomplishes one thing, it’s that it takes attention off LaMelo’s awkward “No. 1 pick” suit.

During the 2019-20 NBA season, the expectation was that LaMelo Ball would be a top-three selection in the draft. It was jut a matter of where he would end up. There was talk of the former Illawara Hawks guard going as high as first-overall to the Minnesota Timberwolves, to potentially dropping out of the top-five altogether. Instead, Michael Jordan opted to take the talented point-man. But things get more awkward, all because of LaVar.

Back in 2017, LaVar was on his publicity tour, where he’d make ridiculous claims about himself and his skillset. Perhaps the most egregious take LaVar made was that he could beat Jordan one-on-one. That’s right, the former member of the 1995 Carolina Panthers practice squad said he could defeat arguably the best basketball player of all-time. Now, we could potentially see this matchup…maybe.

Get ready Charlotte, because you might be hearing a lot from LaVar Ball from the foreseeable future.
