Klay Thompson has reportedly suffered a lower leg injury.

Basketball fans were looking forward to the hectic mania of the 2020 NBA Draft on Wednesday evening, and Golden State Warriors fans in particular were buzzing about what their team might do with the No. 2 overall pick.

Unfortunately, an unhappy bomb was dropped on the timeline less than an hour before the draft began.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Warriors All-Star Klay Thompson suffered a setback in the form of a lower-leg injury. The second Splash Brother will undergo tests to determine the severity of the injury, but this is obviously not good news for the Dubs.

Warriors fear Klay Thompson suffered “significant” achilles injury

The potential good news, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports, is that this latest injury was to his right leg — meaning it’s not the same leg/knee his tore his ACL, which was his left. However, according to The Undefeated’s Marc. J Spears, it’s not looking good:

Later in the night it was reported that Warriors fear Thompson suffered a significant Achilles injury. He has an MRI scheduled for Thursday to determine the extent of the damage.

The Warriors just weren’t the same last year thanks to Kevin Durant’s free-agency departure, Klay Thompson’s torn ACL in the 2018 NBA Finals that sidelined him for the entire season and Stephen Curry’s hand injury that limited him to only 22 games.

With Curry and Klay expected to be fully healthy again for the upcoming 2020-21 campaign, and the Warriors tanking their way to the No. 2 pick in the draft, Dubs fans were excited to see if their team could get the dynasty back on track after a one-year hiatus. Thompson being fully healthy is intrinsic to that, and it’d be devastating to see one of best shooters in NBA history held off the court for any period of time after waiting so long to see how he’d return from a devastating and ill-timed ACL tear.

At 30 years old, and with Curry now being 32, the Warriors’ window to contend is closing. Hopefully this latest setback is just a minor one so we can see Golden State return to full strength against a league that’s changed during their absence.
